20-20 Vision

As we, yet again, start a new year, now is the time to consider where you want to be in 2020.

I know most of us don’t plan further ahead than the next year or maybe next month. This is fine if you want your business or your life to just bumble along but if you seriously want to achieve something with the Biblical three score years and ten that we expect to hang around here for, then you have to have a much clearer vision of where you want to be in next 5 years and what you want to do when you get there.

Imagine yourself in 5 years time. Five years will take you to December 2020 and you have already achieved one target, you are still here. Now, what other targets have you set yourself?

The best way to do this is to close your eyes and see yourself in the future. This is not difficult to do with a little practice and if you can ignore the chattering monkeys (no, not the children, the voices in your head that try to distract you while you are thinking), you will begin to see what you can achieve.

If you are planning your business in the next 5 years imagine what the figures will be like. Picture your office and your team, have they grown? Imagine your customers and the wonderful range of products or services you can offer them. Imagine how much influence you have in the industry and how your competitors are now chasing you rather than the other way round. Get a clear idea of the bottom line because that will be the ultimate target.

If you are planning your life over the next 5 years imagine how your children have grown emotionally as well as physically. How your spouse and you have grown your relationship and fallen deeper in love. Imagine the house you want to live in. Picture it in the finest detail, every room, the carpet on the floor, the garden and the swimming pool, everything. Imagine the car you want to be driving and the holidays you will be taking. Get a clear idea of your world as it will be in 2020.

Now write it all down. Nothing will happen until you put it in writing. I have often come across people who say they know exactly what they want to do with their lives and it is all in their head but that is no good. There is no commitment to a thought pattern, these things have to be written down.

The next stage if to plan the strategy that will get you what you want and we will cover that in the next post.
